On Palm/Passion Sunday, not only was Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church (WMUMC) singing “Hosanna” and waving palms in commemoration of Christ’s regal entry into Jerusalem and the proclamation of the passion, they brought their soles to the altar. The Paschal Mystery was coupled with “Leave Your Shoes @ Church Sunday,” whereby new and gently used, donated shoes received a special blessing as they were offered to help people round the world suffering from enormous hardship!
Donated footwear from THRIVE’s Covenant Congregations and other partners are shipped globally to aid the most impoverished nations of the world where 1.3 billion people—400 million of them children—walk barefoot! Shoes for the disadvantaged open doors to education and improved healthcare, as well as providing life-sustaining essentials through micro-businesses and barter. Your shoe contributions (all kinds and sizes) also raise funds to help feed, shelter, educate and encourage families facing financial crisis in our local community, while simultaneously reducing post-consumer waste in our nation’s landfills.
Thanks to WMUMC for leaving its soles at church on this holy day! We urge YOU to join this global, local and environmental outreach, as well—changing lives—one pair of shoes at a time!
